members who have made your Cuban Numismatic Association (CNA) a thriving and
dynamic organization. In a little over three years, we have become a viable
presence in the Numismatic community.
Since our founding on
We have been very busy in our
desire to improve our CNA, but YOUR help is needed.
A. If you have not paid your
2007 dues, you should not delay another day.
B. If you have not purchased
your CNA Commemorative one ounce silver medal/coin, you should not delay
another day. We still have an inventory of
75 serialized medal/coins left. This represents about $1500 in
inventory. I am quite disappointed with
this project, because I personally believed that all members would
be excited to have their own personalized
medal/coin with their engraved membership number.

could use more input from membership. Articles are needed in your expertise.

WELCOME BACK!
Your CNA welcomes Marisol and
Enrique Cayado. Both gave up their respective leadership roles in January,
2005, due to personal matters. Marisol will be filling her previous position of
Secretary, which has been vacant since her departure. Enrique, a founding
Director, will assume the position of Associate Director/Research. This
position will focus on research of membership inquiries, and position papers
for publication. The Director position, previously held by Enrique, was filled
by Rudy Valentin at the Annual CNA meeting last January.
MEMBER PROFILE
Since the membership of CNA is so diverse, and separated geographically, it may be feasibly impossible for our members to meet and get to know one another. This section will highlight a member, or members, in each newsletter, providing a brief background of the person(s), so the membership may know a little about the person(s). It will be 100% voluntary. The officers and board members will be given first opportunity to provide their background, followed by the charter, then the regular members.

(#1121) and JESUS INGUANZO (#0017)
When you talk about any of these two members, you must
remember they are one. Both were born in
La Habana in the 1940’s, and both pre-teens arrived in Miami in the early 60’s
with the inherent inner pain of true political exiles, who constantly yearn to
return home, and who constantly dream of a free Cuba. Their history, as a
family, started when they met one afternoon in an airport in
In their search for that special something that would keep
them close to
Jesus fell in love with Leonor Molina because of her close
resemblance to Dora. To this day, Jesus cannot resist keeping every 1897/1898
souvenir coin that passes through his hands. What Dora enjoyed about starting
their Cuban coin collection was learning, through Jesus, about the early
history of coins in general, and the feeling was stronger when holding a Cuban
coin. Dora also enjoys the fact that coin collecting gives them an excuse to
travel to the different coin shows. Their children have no choice but to
respect their passion for the love that they have for all things Cuban, including
the little round discs that exemplify all that was great in years past.
CUBAN TRANSPORTATION TOKENS – Part Three

Every country in the world
has had, at one time or another, the necessity to issue what we call tokens, or
private unofficial coinage. There are many reasons, but all have the same
purpose; to benefit an individual or entity.
Tokens have always been
collected by the inhabitants of certain areas, but it is only recently that
tokens have been popular among collectors. This is primarily due to the
increasing price of coins, and published works about the various types of
tokens.
Around 1960, the eminent
numismatist Henry Christensen, published a series on Cuban tokens in his mail
auction catalogs. This information was initially developed by Roberto Pesant,
whose research in Cuban Numismatics is unsurpassed. Mr. Pesant listed the Cuban
tokens in four major groups: sugar estate or plantation (centrales or
ingenios), tobacco plantation, military, and transportation. It is not known if
Mr. Pesant developed a separate segment for the commercial tokens, other than
above.

Obverse – A two wheeled covered coach
drawn by a pair of horses, to the right: the driver astride the nearest
horse. Two
passengers are inside the coach. Around, on the part, FERNANDEZ RAMIREZ Y CIA.
Reverse – The same horse drawn coach,
but to the upper left. Around, on the upper part, EMPRESA
CARRETELAS.

LXII, Pages 23-26. Listed in Fonrobert Catalog II, No. 7741, page 113
& illustrated with a line
drawing dated 1860? Although I have never seen this token, I believe there is
an error in
the drawing and in the description
of the Reverse; the legend should read with an “R”, and not an “L”;
CARRETERAS, which means “Roadways”.
The translation would then read correctly, “Road “transport”

The date is uncertain, but probably
ca. 1870. Believed to belong to a horse drawn coach line that started by the

uphill towards the Ermita de Monserrate.

Obverse – An old fashioned 4-0-4
locomotive to right; with smoke pouring out of its high stack. Around,
Reverse – A steamboat to left: smoke
pouring out of its stack & flags flying from prow and stern masts. Below,
around, HABANA.

The translation of the Obverse reads:
The Bay Railroad Company.

thick planchet.
These tokens were probably worth ½
Real (5 cents). The company was formed in 1837 – the second oldest railroad
in
kilometers. The steamboats portrayed
on the Reverse crossed the harbor from Luz, on the
Casablanca & Fesser, where the
railroad had its terminus. There were three boats in the company; ALFONSO XII,
MARIA ISABEL, and MARIA CRISTINA; the
last two named for the Royal Princesses of Spain.

FO. CL is the contraction for
FERRO-CARRIL, “Railroad”. The translation of the Obverse is “Bay Steamboat
This token was described by B.P.
Wright, M.D., in an article, with line drawing illustration, in the Numismatist
issue of December , 1902, Vol. XV,
No. 12. However, the author mistakenly translated LA PRUBEA in its literal
sense “Railroad”, the experiment
of J. Cabrero”. Actually, the name of
the railroad is derived from the region it
served. It was a very short run, going from
Rigla to Cojimar and to Campo Florido, some twenty odd kilometers
away. In all fairness, there is some
doubt about the information set forth herein.

Same as foregoing except for value
counterstamped on either ide.
It is believed that the reason for
this specific value counterstamp lies in the fact that the Railroad was later
merged
with the other one the went from
only for fare in the steamboats
exclusively.
The ferryboat company was the
successor of the one also described in the foregoing tokens, and they ran until
the
depression years of the 1930’s. The
boat pictured in the token corresponds to the two sister ships,
GUANABACOA and MANUEL UNDERDAWN.
The tokens are ca. 1890.
HAVANA ELECTRIC
RAILWAY COMPANY – HABANA
609. (480-G) One Fare – 18mm – Nickel.
Obverse – Within the perforated
center the enjoined company initials, H E. Around, within two concentric
circles,
ELECTRIC COMPANY.
Reverse – Same as foregoing except
for legend around, VALE POR UN PASAJE.
610. (480-H) One Fare – 18mm – Bronze Plated.
Same as foregoing except for metal.
This trolley company was founded
around 1900 and later also was established for
obtained the franchise for
neighboring Marianao as a railroad, so that after crossing the Almendares
river, the cars had to be
provided with green and red lanterns.
The fare was Five Cents, but after the Second World War, it was increased to
Seven
Cents. During the Thirties,
however, one could buy rolls of 22 tokens for One Peso in order to compete for
passengers with
the public bus company. The
company also obtained a franchise to run urban buses known as “Tranbuses”
(trolley) and
Autobus, but it was short lived.
The tokens were used indistinctively in the trolleys and the buses. The
trolleys were
discontinued in 1952, and all the
tracks were torn up.
These tokens were struck by

center, a vertical strip with the company’s initials in two lines, O/H. Around, within two

Reverse – On the center strip, the
value, ½. Around, within two concentric circles, VALE POR MEDIO PASAJE.
The translation for the reverse is
“Worth One Half Fare”
This bus company was founded in
the late 1920’s, but it was short lived. It was a deluxe type of service but
was unable to
compete with the other lines
since it charged Ten Cents, as against Five Cents for the other ones. The
reason for this curious
Half Fare value was that, as an
incentive during it’s waning years, it gave a Half Fare token for every
collected. In other words, if a
passenger asked for a round trip Fare, he would give the conductor Twenty
Cents, and get back
a Half Fare token. Two of these
tokens, then paid for a future one way ride.

These tokens are not really Fares,
but Transfers, as may be gathered by the legend on the Obverse. The value of
the Fare was
Five Cents, and of a Transfer,
One Cent.
This urban bus line was later sold
to the railroad company, FERROCARRILES CONSOLIDADOS DE
Railways of
kilometers distant. The initials
“FF” are Ferrocarriles (Railways). In Spanish, the plural is always indicated
by doubling the
first initial of the noun. For

Habana Real Hacienda seal

The object properties are:
Manufacture: Uniface, cast, white metal, non
magnetic (probably silver or copper/silver alloy).
Diameter: 33 mm.
Thickness: 1.25 mm.
Weight: 10.2 gr.
The obverse has a Spanish shield with a visible
Borbon inescutcheon; the rampant lions are facing right. A mirror (reversed) image of the legend RL
HACIENDA DE LA HAVANA surrounds the shield. The reversed shield and legend is indicative
of a seal, where the impression made on lacre or paper reads the correct
way. It is likely an ink stamp because
of the flatness of the lettering and devices, seals made for use on lacre
(commonly called wax seals) usually have incuse lettering and devices so that
the lettering appear on high relief on the lacre.

The Real Hacienda was a combination of IRS,
Customs, Federal Reserve, GSA, FBI, CIA, Treasury, and anything pertaining to
the share of the king. It became central
to European economies after the first sample treasure shipment from Villa Rica
de la Vera Cruz (

from 1700 forward. We can perhaps exclude Felipe V (1700) and Luis I

AUCTION RESULTS: It is noted that coins with identical grader ratings demand different prices. This is due to (a) buyer’s preference,
grader,s tolerance, and opportunity. For example; it appears
that more interested Cuban buyers were at the Heritage auction then the others.

This newsletter, a
simple recipe is provided for FLAN:
FLAN. The mysterious dessert that Gringo’s have a hard
time pronouncing.
INGREDIENTS: Half cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon water for
the caramel covering.
One 14 oz. can of condensed
milk, one 12 oz. can of evaporated milk, 4 eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, and
pinch of salt (optional).
Heat water and sugar in small
pot over high heat. Stir constantly with metal or wooden spoon until the sugar
caramelizes to a light brown syrup. Add a small amount of water if necessary
during stirring. Remove from heat.
Using a double boiler, cover
small mold bottom with caramelized sugar.
Mix all ingredients in
blender and pour into mold. Cover with lid. Partially fill bottom pan of double
boiler with water. Cook at low heat for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted
into the center, comes out dry. When ready, remove mold and let cool to room
temperature, then place in refrigerator for 2 hours. Once cold, turn over onto
a serving dish.
If a double boiler is
unavailable, place the flan mold (a small bundt cake pan will suffice) in a
large Pyrex dish filled with water, and cook in oven for about an hour at 350
degrees.

1. A problem is that some ISP providers, such as AOL, retain the Pages of Websites on your computer in the internet cache, to speed up transmission. If you are an AOL subscriber, “REFRESH” your explorer connection by hitting “F5” key while you are on the page that does not appear to be current. Make sure that you are using the latest version of AOL, which is 9.0
2. Install Adobe Acrobat, including Adobe Reader 7.0. It is a free download, and available at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
NOTE: Stan has also made two enhancements on our CNA websites that are especially useful to Ebay users.
